Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
