Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team Against Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a surprise call-up.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team after scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia search for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
