Sonic Racing Throws Shots at Mario Kart World in Recent Ad Blitz

It's 2025, and the promotional efforts for the Sonic kart racing title aim to recall the classic console rivalry spirit. The latest ad spot for the Sega's kart racer reportedly displays grainy clips of Mario Kart World, using it to argue that the rival title underuses its open-world framework.

Critiquing the Rival Title

"We all know that kart racing game, it's great, there's no need to show it to you," the commercial begins. "But what if you could blast through and play on a higher tier?" The spot then goes on to emphasize several of the game's key aspects, like deep car personalization and multi-system play.

"Alternatively, perhaps you would like to drive around on the expansive world?" the voiceover questions, full of skepticism.

A History of Competition

This may not be the initial instance that the developers behind the Sonic racing game have targeted Mario Kart World, it is certainly the most direct they have spoken regarding the head-to-head battle. The advertisement also recreates a retro promo for the classic Sega console that told viewers about the system's "advanced processing" power. Back then, Sega showcased its system's edge by featuring a speeding vehicle dominating a circuit. In the final moments, it compared the Nintendo's console to an aging Winnebago that had Nintendo's classic running on a tube screen tied to the end of the RV using a cord.

Launch Information

CrossWorlds arrives next week on Sept. 25 for Nintendo Switch, Sony's previous-gen system, Sony's current console, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Though, players who pre-order can play it early... but not if they're on Switch. Well.
