Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
